I don't agree with the statement that "people should not have to pay for the unhealthy life styles of others". There is enough evidence that suggest that some people have their weigh problems because of genetics etc - some people just put weight on even if they eat pretty much the same food as slim people and execise just as much. What about people that stuff their faces and never gain a pound? Can people that support the argument that only people that live "unhealty" life styles are obese explain that to me? Some people just have a higher rate of metabolism than others among other factors

Some people do have faster metabolism then others, so yes, genetics play a big role in ones appearance. However, I have not seen a single obese person chewing on apples or steamed veggies on their way to the gym or a brisk walk in the park. It is usually Big Mac and Diet Coke Please! Well, ofcaurse it is easier to blame your genetics, your parents, your dog and etc. I can't argue that there are exceptions to the rule, but in general most obese people are like that just because they are past the point of caring or simply don’t care. Any person who exercises and watches his/her diet will be near his her healthy body weight. What makes me sad is seeing obese parents buying a Happy Meal and Baskin Robins to their obese kids on the way from school! It just does not make any since to me! Are they blind?

Hi there Blogger, I had been out looking for some new information on obesity drugs when I found your site and Obesity in America Blog. Though not just what I was searching for, it drew my attention. An interesting post and I thank you for it.
I am currently a USF student and I wrote this blog as a reflection of my ideas for our second paper in English Composition 2. I will be talking about the ethics related to obesity. Obesity arises a major issue in bioethics. Some people say that obesity has become a disease that should be like any other disease and that the people are not to blame for their obesity because it is something that is inflicted on them due to certain circumstances. Others argue that obesity is a weakness that is caused by the individuals’ carelessness or their lack of desire and commitment to lose weight and cure their problem.
In my opinion, Obesity is not a disease because it can be cured easily and it is not something that a person cannot control except in seldom circumstances. It is up to each individual to control himself and try to keep his body healthy and looking good. Obesity is a weakness in personality or willpower. The root to the problem is lack of self control over one’s intake on food and their laziness which results in lack of exercise as well. Many people argue that people who are obese should not be considered as first choice candidates for jobs due to their increased heath risks which may cause the company more money.
So, the “Obesity Epidemic” is just a reflection of some individuals’ lack of control, willpower and dedication to improve the state their in and become more healthy and fit. I would love some feedback for my reasearch so feel free to share your ideas!

According to research, approxiamately 127 million adults in America are overweight and 60 million are obese. These figures will keep rising unless changes take place in society aswell as with the individuals themselves. For example, many adverts are displayed on television of certain fatty, unhealthy, foods which are very tempting to the majority of people. Imagine how hard it is for those who are overweight or obese, and trying to lose weight, to be constantly confronted with these adverts and billboards!?! Why are there very little adverts promoting healthy foods!?! Other countries are catching up with America on the obesity scale and therefore we can establish that something needs to be done to help and encourage those that are overweight or obese, to enable them to reach a healthy target. We are always looking at the negatives regarding obesity, but if we look to how we could change this problem, perhaps we will be a step closer towards a positive outcome.
