Magazine recognizes child obesity fight

With child obesity on the rise in America, a Fairhope Elementary School P.E. teacher is being featured in Sports Illustrated for her innovative approach to getting kids to be more active. Kristie Andres, a third-grade physical education teacher, has combined recess-style fun with traditional athletic activities to make exercising enjoyable for her students. Andres' program is featured in the Nov. 15 issue of Sports Illustrated as an example of a "creative curriculum," in an article about the growing problem of childhood obesity in America. According to the American Obesity Association, 15.3 percent of children ages 6 to 11 were obese in 2000 -- up from 7 percent 20 years earlier. What do you think about that ? You can share your thoughts here.

Parents' Action for Children (a nonprofit founded by actor/director Rob Reiner) just launched "Stir It Up," a national parents' campaign to get junk foods out of our schools. Parents across the country are taking action. See www.stiritupamerica.com for more info.

Interesting read! I think the best way to start promoting healthy eating in children is removing sweets and sodas from schools! Five to ten (depending on if the children are eating both breakfast and lunch) are eaten at school every week. Children will hopefully pick up healthier eating habits this way for the rest of their lives, also! You can find some additional interesting reading over at the Dietary Supplement Information Bureau page on childhood obesity.
